Stop Renting Bad Movies, Pleas from a Clerk on the EdgeMEMENTO really made me pay attention and make my own conclusions. In fact, there was one thing in particular I felt the film really lacked. But you know what? I can’t discuss it with anyone, because no one will watch it. So guess what? All of you readers out there who have missed out on this movie, I’m going to tell you what I found wrong with it. If you haven’t had the sense to go enjoy it by now, I may as well ruin the fun for you. ***MAJOR SPOILERS*** At the end of the movie we find out that Teddy (Joe Pantoliano) is actually a cop. A year ago he helped Leonard find the real John G and Leonard killed him. But then Leonard forgot. So Teddy has been feeding him fake clues to give him something to do. Leonard finds this out at the end of the movie/beginning of the story, and is so upset, he scratches out the truth that is written on the Polaroid of Teddy and writes that Teddy lies. Then he writes down Teddy’s license plate number knowing that in just a matter of minutes he will forget who Teddy really is and then believe that Teddy is John G. An interesting ending, for sure, but something just didn’t sit right with it. Watching the movie one begins to feel fond of Leonard, wants to protect him as everyone is messing with his mind and altering his reality. So in the end, when we see he’s only set himself up for this miserable life, it just doesn’t seem like something he would do. As complex as it was, the ending seemed more like an excuse to surprise us, than something that this character we’ve grown to like would have done. ***SPOILERS OVER*** Go and rent it anyway. Walk past the Segal movie, the inferior sequel, and the want to see another piece of trash. Giving money to movies like these only gets more of that kind made. And yes, there are good things about throwaway movies that rot your mind. But be different! Make this video clerk happy. I’ll take your late fees off if you do.
