For a comedy, The Sweetest Thing, featuring Cameron Diaz, Christina Applegate, and Selma Blair, falls flat. In an attempt to make single women looking for Mr. Right amusing, this movie manages to offend and embarrass everyone involved, including its own viewers.

The single and sexy Christina Walters (Cameron Diaz) lives her life as a shallow woman, screwing over men, and treating them like dogs. Until the day Christina takes her friends Jane (Selma Blair) and Courtney (Christina Applegate) out club hoping to cheer up Jane who is suffering from the effects of a bad breakup. While attempting to boost Jane’s self esteem, Christina hits on an unsuspecting hot guy (Thomas Jane) who quickly chastises Christina for her behavior. Intrigued, Christina ends up following him around all night, getting to know him in a more mature manner. Still smitten with him after an evening at the club, Christina’s thoughts drift to them together as a couple.

Meanwhile, Jane lands a new beau and ends up in every compromising position with him, including several demeaning moments getting caught at the dry cleaners with a mysterious stain on her dress, while every childhood acquaintance she knows comes to drop off their innocent laundry stains, to getting it on with her new guy as he’s dressed in an elephant suit, to the most gruesome scene of all when Jane needs help detaching her mouth from her beau’s member.

Christina and Courtney don’t fare much better. Courtney decides the two of them should try to track down the cute guy from the club and set out on a Lavern and Shirley style road trip. Along the way, they manage to throw themselves in every predicament imaginable, including fending off bad plumbing at a gas station, one could only imagine what happened next.

Since their clothes are ruined, Christina and Courtney decide to shop at a little boutique and indulge us in a costume movie montage, making the viewers wonder if we will be spared another cliché. Unfortunately, the film is full of bad jokes and clichés.

Cameron Diaz, Christina Applegate, and Selma Blair are too talented of actresses to accept to act in such a poorly written script. Even Diaz’s underwear dancing and wide grin could not save this film. Nor could Christina Applegate make us laugh with her post-Married With Children bimbo attitude.

Selma Blair was mousy, which made it difficult to sympathize for her when she made poor decisions. Parker Posey is the only one in the film who managed to play her role best as a bride with cold feet, however, her scenes were very few in number.
