Rock StarRock Star is loosely based off the real life replacement of Judas Priest’s lead singer (Rob Halford) with a fan of their band (Tim “Ripper” Owens) in 1997. Mark Wahlberg plays Chris Cole an eyeliner wearing copy machine repairman by day and a fictional 1980’s British tribute band lead singer by night. Steel Dragon, the band Cole idolizes, picks him out of the crowd one night noticing his uncanny ability to mimic their lead singer. Shortly after the concert Dragon gives the boot to their own lead singer and an unsuspecting Cole is called in to audition for the part. While auditioning for the lead spot, Cole is interrupted mid-song and is quickly rewarded for his efforts being given the job to sing for the band that he once sang tribute songs for. The film has a few questionable scenes among the drugged out orgies, a candlelit nipple piercing scene between Wahlberg and Aniston and the groupie following reminiscent of the movie “Almost Famous,” Rock Star sums up very quickly what it is like to sing for a heavy metal band. Throughout the film Jennifer Aniston plays Cole’s girlfriend Emily in a poor attempt to appear naïve. Aniston is way too sophisticated to be playing such a young role. Although, she does wear some interesting outfits that portray her as a more confidant woman than her character was meant to be. Emily ends up tiring of the rock star, heavy metal life and leaves Cole at his burnt out prime. When Cole finally hits bottom and finds there is no creative outlet of his own he looks out into the crowd one night and sees someone just like himself in the front row singing along perfectly to Steel Dragon’s tunes. On this particular night Cole brings the guy onstage and asks him if he knows all the words. When the new guy answers in the affirmative Cole passes the microphone to him and heads off the stage for good. Cole leaves the glitzed out life and begins singing more low key songs in coffee houses around Seattle when he meets back up with his old love Emily. Rock Star is not as good as prior films about rocker life, however, it is still entertaining for those that would love to relive the 1980’s. If anything you could always play a game of how many cameos can I find in this film, as Third Eye Blind and Ozzy show up for small supporting roles.
