Moulin RougeBaz Luhrmann's rapid editing cuts can make the beginning of this film hard to stomach. If you are able to make it through the introduction you are in for a real treat. The story unfolds in 1899 Paris where the life of the Moulin Rouge is the most popular place in town. The star of the club is the beautiful, tall, slender and long haired Satine played by Nicole Kidman, who is trying to make it as a singer and will do anything to get there, including a promise to never fall in love. In comes the talented but penny poor Christian (Ewan McGregor) whose poetry and songs enthrall Satine into a romantic love affair with him. When the Director of the Moulin Rouge tells Satine all her dreams will come true if she marries English duke (Richard Roxburgh) ,who agrees to fund Christians play, she finds herself torn between the man she loves and the man who could give her everything but love. Christian’s theatrical idea for the cast of the Moulin Rouge titled oddly enough, Spectacular, Spectacular places Satine at a crossroads of decisions. As Christians love affair with Satine becomes a competition between him and the English duke his play turns into the actors portraying their real life love triangle. Satine’s fate is sealed when she learns she is sick and will most likely die from it. With awful coughing attacks and the hours of hard work she puts into making it big, Satine becomes weaker but still goes on for the sake of stardom. Just before opening night of Spectacular, Spectacular a broken hearted Satine tells Christian that she can not see him anymore and that she does not love him. Christian is sent into a whirl wind of depression as the days leading up to opening night draw near. The English duke figures out that Satine does not love him and decides in a jealous rage that he is going to kill Christian. On opening night of the play portraying their love triangle, Christian makes an entrance with the goal of winning back Satine’s heart. The ending is wild when the gun that is meant for Christian’s fate ends up flying out of the hands of several people and Satine continues to become more and more sick as the show goes on. In the final scene she is lusting for Christian again and sadly due to her illness falls to her death.
