VCD Mania in the Philippines

© Manila Philippines

Within the past few years, the so-called "VCDs" or Video CDs have proliferated the Asian market. This is due to the fact that VCDs are cheaper than DVDs. The quality is not as crisp as DVD but it is comparable to VHS quality.

I'm going to talk about Karaoke VCDs and Philippine movie VCDs. They're really great, and I am quite addicted to them, just like most Filipinos.

The original kind (the ones that you can buy here in the U.S. are all originals), usually cost between 8 dollars to around 12 dollars (for newer movies). I have heard about the bootleg copies that are being sold around Metro Manila for 3 to 5 dollars.

Anyway, you can play these VCDs in most DVD players, but you can also buy VCD machines that play VCDs only, or you can buy those karaoke machines that play VCD and CDG (CD plus graphics). I'll list some websites that feature these, but you can also search around the 'Net (google: type VCD or VCDs).

Filipinos are karaoke/videoke afficionados. I've been to several Pinoy parties, and right after we eat, we always end up singing the night away. We have tons of Videoke bars in the Philippines.

Filipinos love to sing! We love to entertain and have fun. Some people sing to their heart's content, even though they may not sound like a professional singer. Singing specially during special occasions is a big stress reliever and it also perks up the party. I've seen http://www.singalongcenter.com advertise on a Filipino-oriented magazine here in the U.S. They offer some neat karaoke machines that can play vcds.

I recently ordered some Pinoy movies from http://www.regalfilms.com They were great! They help ease my homesickness. They also offer OPM (Original Pinoy Music) videoke VCDs.

I ordered American VCD movies from http://www.coolvcd.com Although they are based in Malaysia, my shipment arrived within 3-4 days.

VCDs are here to stay. They are affordable, and I love collecting them. If you're thinking of having a Pinoy party in your house, don't forget to stack up on VCDs.
