ABC provided live coverage of the 2001 State Farm U.S. Figure Skating Championships from the Fleet Center in Boston, Mass. For the Ladies Free Skate, the commentators were Terry Gannon, Peter Carruthers and Peggy Flemming. Beatrisa Liang skated first, and her musical selection was "Symphony No. 6; Concerto No. 1" by Tchaikovsky. For her opening jump, she did a triple flip which was really nice. Next was a triple lutz/double toe combination, followed by a triple toe/double toe combination. She showed good flow across the ice, but did fall on a triple jump near the end, and stepped out of a triple lutz. Technical: 5.2 - 5.5, Presentation: 5.1 - 5.4. Next to skate was Michelle Kwan, who skated to "Song of the Black Swan" by Villa Lobos. She started off with a triple loop, had great position in the air and on the landing. Next was a planned triple toe/triple toe combination but she only did a double toe/double toe combination. Michelle did an excellent triple lutz/double toe, a triple salchow, a triple flip, a double axel, a triple lutz, and a triple toe added at the end. Technical: 5.7 - 5.8, Presentation: 5.9 - 6.0. Michelle received 2 perfect 6's in her presentation marks! Amber Corwin skated next to "Ophelia" by Natalie Merchant. Her opening move was a triple toe/triple toe combination, followed by a triple lutz/double toe, a triple loop/double loop, on which she showed nice position. To finish up her routing, Amber did a triple flip, and a triple salchow, and seemed calm and controlled on the ice. Technical: 5.2 - 5.7, Presentation: 5.3 - 5.6. Next to skate was Jenny Kirk, who skated to "The Nutcracker" by Tchaikovsky. Jenny started off with a planned triple lutz/double toe combination which she tried but was leaning and did not complete. This was followed by a triple toe/triple toe combination, a double axel, a triple loop, a triple flip, a triple lutz, and a triple toe. Technical: 5.4 - 4.6, Presentation: 5.5 - 5.7. Next to last was Sarah Hughes who skated to "Don Quixote" by Minkus. She opened with a double axel, followed by a triple salchow/triple loop combination, followed by a triple loop, a triple lutz/double toe, a triple flip, a triple lutz, a triple toe loop, and a nice, strong combination spin, She showed beautiful extension on her arms and legs, and had an excellent arch in her back on her spins. Technical: 5.6 - 5.8, Presentation: 5.8 - 5.9.
