State Farm US FS Championships: Original Dance and Pairs Short

Held at the Fleet Center in Boston, Mass., the 2001 State Farm U.S. Figure Skating Championships have begun. ESPN aired coverage of the Original Dance and Pairs short programs, which were 2 1/2 minutes long and totaled 30 percent of the final score. This event was hosted by Terry Gannon, Susie Wynne, Peter Carruthers and Peggy Flemming. During the Original Dance short program, several elements are required. They are: two lifts, diagonal footwork, straight footwork, and one dance spin. Deductions are taken as follows: stumble or brief interruption, .1, fall of one partner, .2, fall of both partners, .3, and lady lifted too high, .1. Skating first were Jessica Valentine and Matther Kossack, followed by Tanith Belbin and Benjamin Agosto, Kimberly Navarro and Robert Shmalo, Jessica Joseph and Brandon Forsyth, Beata Handra and Charles Sinek, Naomi Lang and Peter Tchernyshev, and Caitlin Obremski and Jonathan Magalnick. The results of the short program were: (1) Lang/Tchernyshev, (2) Handra/Sinek, (3) Belbin/Agosto, (4) Joseph/Forsyth, (5) Valentine/Kossack, (6) Navarro/Shmalo, and (7) Obremski/Magalnick. During the Pairs short program, several elements are also required. They are: Hand-to-hand lift, split double twist, throw jump, side-by-side jumps, side-by-side spins, pair spin, death spiral, and spiral sequence. Deductions are also taken as follows: fall on a throw jump, .3, fall or single by one partner on a side-by-side jump, .3, step out of landing on a throw jump, .2, and stumble during a step sequence, .1 - .2. Skating first were Laura Handy and Jonathan Hunt, followed by Danielle Hartsell and Steve Hartsell, Stephanie Kalesavich and Aaron Parchem, Tiffany Scott and Philip Dulebohn, Larisa Spielberg and Craig Joeright, Amanda Magarian and Jared Guzman, Tiffany Stiegler and Johnnie Stiegler, Sima Ganaba and Amir Ganaba, and Kyoko Ina and John Zimmerman. The results of the short program were: (1) Hartsell/Hartsell, (2) Ina/Zimmerman, (3) Scott/Dulebohn, (4) Handy/Hunt, (5) Kalesavich/Parchem, (6) Magarian/Guzman, (7) Stiegler/Stiegler, (9) Spielberg/Joeright, and (11) Ganaba/Ganaba. Next to air on ESPN will be the Men's and Ladies short programs, which I will be reporting on soon.
