Going out in the woods hiking, jogging or even camping is great fun and exercise. However, if you're not really a woodsy person, (for instance you don't know that moss grows on the north side of trees), you really should take along the following instruments besides a cell phone:

HighGear's AltiTech2 which is an alti - navigation multi purpose digital tool. This would give you nearly everything you would need to get home. Rugged and easy to use, this unit has HighGear's trademark caribiner clip for easy latching on your backpack or belt loop. Here's what it does:

Altimeter-displays altitude readings as both accumulated and maximum. Stores 20 altimeter data readings with altitude, time and date.

Barometer-you'll want to have this because you never know when the weather will change and you'll need to get home or to shelter. This digital barometer updates itself every minute. If you see the barometer rising, it is an indicator of clear weather on the horizon. If it is falling, it can be read as a prelude to cloudy or rainy weather. If it's steady, then expect more of the same of whatever is currently outside. There is a weather display which gives a weather forecast based on the past 24 hours of readings.

Compass-digital compass with adjustable declination. Has a built in leveling bubble for increased accuracy in calibrating. You will definitely need this if you are hiking in the mountains or woods as it can get you home or to civilization.

Temperature - digital thermometer with 0.1 degree resolution and works from -4F to 156F. Can be changed between Fahrenheit and Celsius.

The AT2 also displays the time, date and day of the week. It has 2 daily alarms and hourly chime signal. It is a 1/100 second resolution chronograph with a Lap / Split display. With a rubberized grip, anodized aluminum carbiner, it wraps up the package with a cool blue backlight for readings in the dark. This has got to be the most user friendly equipment I've seen to date but just what you'd expect from HighGear.

I'd back this up with their SmartLatch-Temp which is a digital thermometer and floating dial compass. It actually detaches so you can separate the two units. This is an important backup incase your digital unit malfunctions. Has
