Summer is the perfect time to hone your
skills with off ice cross training to
prepare you for the upcoming season.
Excellent off ice classes in stretching
and core conditioning were presented at
the 2004 USFSA Adult Training Camp
this year which ran from June 25 to the
27th. Now in its fourth year, this annual
event was held at our area's most elite
skating facility, the Ice House located in
Hackensack, New Jersey. According to
figure skating director, Craig Maurizi,
campers came in from as far as
California with representatives from at
least 20 different states. The quality of
the classes is the major draw and what
keeps students returning year after year.
Off ice warm up classes for stretching
and flexibility were taught by Olympic
gymnast Tatiana Droutchinina who also
teaches ballet for figure skaters.
Tatiana’s suppleness is legendary but
this is a key element to avoiding injury
and excess soreness after practice.
Tatiana’s class includes modern dance
moves which makes her program all the
more enjoyable.
Sean Donellan is also one of the off ice professionals and director of the Strength & Conditioning Program. Sean said that core conditioning involves toning of the part of the body from just below the chest to the top of the knees. His class was excellent and showed innovative ways to do push-ups using a balance ball while showing most warm up exercises need no equipment at all. Kim Murphy and Wendy Weston pulled everything together in their off ice jumps class. This is where conditioning meets technique as we went through a series of plyometrics including long jumping and skips to help improve the height as well as quality of our jumps. The class was held outdoors in the fresh open air in the park and gave us the chance to try multiple rotation jumps landed, (or not), on soft, lush grass! Top level coaches included Robin Wagner, Silvia Fontana, John Zimmerman, Artur Dmitriev and Peter Tchernychev. Robin taught an on ice body movement program that was fantastic as it encouraged us to include emotion and dancability in our skating. “You have been given a gift. Not everyone can do what you do on the ice. Use that gift!” were her words. “You all can be champions in your own right”. We were all truly inspired and had a great time doing dance movements on ice and just letting go. All of the sessions were well planned according to the level of the skaters while keeping the groups relatively small. Hand outs were also provided to reinforce what was covered in class.
