Making that Perfect Competition Dress Part II

What more could you possibly add to beautify a figure skating dress? As was shown in the previous article and part one of this series, there are all sorts of options available for such a purpose.

If you'd like to go to the next level of costume design, consider air brushing! With today's high tech equipment, you can turn out a one-of-a-kind masterpiece very quickly. It's true. Air brushing allows custom detailing and decoration often only seen on movie sets. The unit I tested for this application was the Badger 100 SG, dual action air-brush gun and the NEW Air Star V portable compressor by Thayer & Chandler. The Air Star V is lightweight and quiet with a handle on top for easy portability. It even has a holder to carry or rest your airbrush! It has an automatic shut off, adjustable air regulator & pressure gauge. This allows just the right pressure for whatever job you want to do. This top flight combination gives you the even flow and control needed for most any artistic project you will want to tackle. What makes air brushing so easy is actually the equipment. Your airbrush gun should be a dual action model. This allows you to pull back on the lever and adjust the amount of paint and air supplied from a very narrow line to a wider mist. Badger has been making air brushes in America for over 100 years and is the choice of most serious artists. The unit I tested was extremely easy to use and control with steady, even flow.

You can really go crazy with all sorts of designs and effects! One of my favorites was to use opalescent fabric paint in the airbrush. This gives a subtle sheen of glitter almost like mother of pearl or an abalone shell. This doesn't really change the color of the fabric but adds interest and a rainbow effect which is caught by the light. Breath taking! So what else can you do with an air-brush? Well, the latest trend among Hollywood's A-list celebrities is to have one's makeup airbrushed! Talk about a luxurious, flawless finish. I caught up with one of the top makeup artists in the business, Kris Evans, who has over 20 years experience doing makeup for feature films like House of Sand and Fog and Pirates of the Caribbean. She's honed her skills studying in France and doing work with the Royal Shakespeare
