Growing Herbs Indoors,

© Bob Ewing

Greetings, last week we began looking at how we can move the field into the home as the weather turns cold. Many homes will be unable to meet all their food needs during the cold months unless they combine a number of techniques, canning and preserving, sprouting, dehydration and growing your own. This week we will take a quick look at how you can provide your family with fresh herbs, even during the coldest winter months. If you want to find our more about food preservation a search on The Suite will get you all the information you need.

If you are going to grow food succesfully indoors, you will need to make some adjustments. You, especially if you are seeking quantity, will need to rethink your living space, how much do you use for your garden. You are also limited by the amount of light each area gets. As I mentioned last week you will need six hours of sunlight, if you want your vegetables and herbs to thrive. So, depending, upon the number of rooms you have that provide this amount of sunlight, you will need to plan your garden with that in mind.

Herbs are an important part of any diet and if you are looking to provide ample nutrition for your family, then consider growing a few indoors. Basil is one of my personal favourites and I always have some growing nearby. There are many varieties to choose from and it makes an ideal companion plant for tomatoes. I also grow bay laurel indoors and enjoy clipping a leaf, with the proper respect, whenever I make tomatoe sauce. An interesting aside that is worth considering, some herbs are excellent pathogen killers. Eat well and be well.

Next week, we look at the design aspects for planning the garden, how to make the best use of space and take a quick look at indoor lighting.

but have to admit I don't grow any. Good idea to grow your own herbs, though.
