Yacon, expanding the possibilities

I just came in from working on the two raised beds out back. It is a grey and cool day, still too early for planting out, but never too early to weed. One thing about weeds is that they do grow well. In the near future, I'll begin looking at weeds and their true nature. It has been said that a weed is merely a plant that we do not yet know.

Last week we took a look at plants from the Andes. As promised, here is a source for yacon. You can't order online but you can email them with your needs. Another source Also provides a wide range of plants that you may not find in your neighbourhood nursery.

If you are moving beyond simply growing your own food and giving some thought to the commercial potential of various plants, then the more you know about the plant, the better. Knowledge will make the difference between success and failure. In addition, to knowing about your choice of product, you need to be aware of the potential market for that product and how to reach that market.

Marketing is both a science and an art form. The time you spend developing your marketing skills is time well spent. If you are planning to sell within your local community, find out if there are any community newspapers. The ads will not be that expensive and the circulation reaches your target market. If you have some writing skill, you may be able to provide them with a monthly column that relates to your business. This way you can generate your own market and create interest in what you have to offer the community. Or you may want to start a newsletter of your own and distribute it throughout the neighbourhood.

If there is a craft or farmer's market locally, it may be a good idea to rent a table for a few weeks and introduce yourself to the community. You could also consider a yard sale, or setting up a produce stand. Check the local by-laws and with the public health unit. You may need a liscense. If you do things right the first time, you increase your odds of winning and avoid any costly mistakes.
