Today, the weather is glorious. Blue skies, the Sun brilliant. On the weekend we had a blizzard. That's right a blizzard. Friday, I was in my back yard, cleaning my raised beds and planning the Spring planting. I was wearing a tshirt and shorts. I wake up Saturday morning to a snow storm, high winds and cold. One important element of any effective business plan is your financial plan, not just the income-expense statements but where the money to operate your business will come from. It does not matter which green business you are planning to operate, a organic flower business, a speciality herb business or a catering business, you still need sound financing to be successful. If you have limited resource and are unlikely to qualify for a loan from a bank or family members there is still hope. If there is a peer lending circle in your community, you can apply for membership. The circle will not only provide you with the necessary funds, but support and education. Starting your own business is a risky and stressful undertaking and accurate information and informed support can reduce the risk and the stress. You get to bounce your business plan off of the other group members, all of whom have your success at heart. They actually want you to do well. If there is no peer lending circle or microcredit organization in town, then perhaps you may want to start one. This way you are helping yourself while providing others with the necessary support. Support that gives them the opportunity for self-reliance. In the process of setting up a peer lending circle or in joining one, you may find others who are interested in starting a business that is similar to yours. You could consider froming a cooperative. This way you are bringing a diverse set of skills to the table. Each member strengthens the coop. Whichever path you choose, make sure your financing is sound. Next week, we begin a look at the numerous forms that a green plant business can take as well as which plants may be provide you with your own market niche.
