Looking Back

Spring is in the air, that sweet, gentle feeling that hints at warmer days to come and renewal. I know that it is still some time off, but we've had such marvelous weather this past week that my mind turns to that time of rebirth and growth. As I'm planning this year's gardening and considering various ways to augment my food supply, I find my mind slowly looking back over the past months and seeing the changes. So this week while in this reflective frame of mind, I decided to take a look back at where this weekly exploration has travelled.

From Field to Table has undergone a number of changes since it first began as an idea to explore how our food moves from the field, where it is grown, to the table where we consume it. I've written articles on everything from mushrooms to Monsanto. Often, I was tempted to write about gardening, because it is a personal passion and an essential skill, if you want to become self-sufficient or, in other words, become your own food productions system, however, there are many excellent garden writers here at the Suite and visiting them will satisfy anyone's gardening needs.

I am a vegetarian but believe that animals can and perhaps, must play an important role in any food system. I have talked about keeping animals within city limits and still feel that this is possible, and, perhaps, even more important, no matter what you eat you should know where it comes from, for example, what that strip of bacon was before you serve it with scrambled eggs. This knowledge helps you appreciate the work that goes into putting food on your table.

If you are fond of eggs, you may want to know more about poultry which I believe is an ideal element for an urban farm. Hate to cut grass htne give soem thought to getting a goat and let it do the work for you. Goats also supply milk and cheese. A goat, a few chickens or ducks, your back and front yards converted into edible flower and vegetables gardens and voila you have been transformed from an urban house dweller into an urban market gardener living off the food you and your family produce.
