Who is Monsanto?

The heat spell has ended and cooler temperatures prevail. Yesterday's rain helped reduce the fire threat and was the signal that the weather had indeed changed. I covered my tomatoes last night. They are doing well, but it hit 1 celius, the night before and I'm taking no chances. Last week I talked about the controvesry that surrounds the industrial food production system. This week we are going to take a close look at one of the major players, Monsanto. This is how Monsanto describes itself: "Monsanto is a life sciences company dedicated to improving the quality of life that people experience by providing products to help them live healthier and more productive lives. Monsanto is on the forefront of the effort to sustain our planet while providing for the "family" of 6 billion people who live here. Throughout the company, from pharmaceutical and agricultural products, to the "healthy for you" ingredients we produce, Monsanto is the company committed to giving Food, Health and Hope to the millions who need it." There are those who would disagree. One area of major contention is the use of nutrasweet. Nutrasweet , a Monsanto company, uses its home page to offer proof of its safety. They directly challenge the claims of those who are opposed to the use of all artificial sweetners. I'm not going to take a side here but will provide readers with a number of links so that they can examine the situation for themselves and get a closer look at this food giant.
