Seeds, no future without them.

I don't know about you but I'm ready for Spring. Just when we get a day that feels as if Winter has finally ended, we get five days, that remind us it is still very much present. Today was the first, above -10C day in past week, let's hope this warming trend continues. I just placed my first seed order for the season. I live in zone 3 and it will be, at least 10-12 weeks, before it is time to plant out, so there's still plenty of time. I plant, with the exception of tomatoes, my seeds directly into the garden, around the end of May, beginnning of June. I start the tomatoes, indoors about six weeks before that.

If you are preparing for Y2K or just want to increase your personal food security, I recommend ordering more seeds this year than you actually need. If nothing else, they may make an excellent barter item. They will come in handy if any serious disruption to the food supply happens. I have mentioned in previosu articles that there are several threats to our food supply which begin with controlling seeds both their production and their distribution. If you have a seed surplus, you may not have to worry about this threat. Heritage seeds will help you insure that you are starting with the best quality.

I suggest that if you are a beginning or an experienced gardener and haven't visited Suite 101's Home and Garden section then do so right away. Here, you will learn all you need to know about creating and maintaining a succesful garden. If you don't see what you are looking for, just ask, one of the Contributing Editors will do their best to answer.

I also suggest that, if you haven't already done so and this is especially for beginning gardeners, you request a number of seed catalogues. They are excellent sources of basic information and can assist both the advanced and beginning gardeners.
