Your Own Business

The Festival of Lights is near. It is hard to believe. The sun shining through the kitchen window is so intense it could be Spring. The air is damp. The sun is hot. There is no snow. It has been like this for days now. What is going on?I'll get back to that another day.

Find yourself thinking about being your own boss. It is a great fantasy that could become a reality. Use slow and small solutions. Build a sound foundation and then gradually expand.

. Well before you get started you might want to take this test. I know from first hand experience that setting up and successfully operating your own business is a challenge. Even if you have decided that the business opportunity you are pursuing can be run out of your own house, there is still much to consider.

First, where in your home will your office be? If your answer is the kitchen table, think again. At the very least, you want a desk in a private place where you can work undisturbed. It does not matter that you grow a special salad blend for sale to local restaurants and green grocers, there will always be paperwork. You need a place to file it and work on it. Now if you are single and live alone, this is much easier but if you have a spouse and children then it gets somewhat more complicated. Is there a room in your house that can be set aside for office space and only office space?

If you don't have a private space that can serve solely as your office, then can you set up shop in the corner of your basement , for example? If not, you may want to look around town and see if you can rent affordable space. There may be a business incubator service that you could use. A business incubator enables the tenants to share facilities and equipment such as fax and photocopier as well as the services of a receptionist.

The reason for a private space in your home is family and friends may have difficulty accepting that you are working when you are at home. After all you are right there. If you have a private space and can clsoe the door, you could post office hours. This way people know when you are working. On the flip side of this, it will be easier for you to focus on the work that you need to do. You may have to work into the evening and the family may be settling down to watch a movie. You can be easily tempted to join them and tell yourself that you can finish the paperwork tomorrow. Well, if you have planned in advance maybe you can, but if not, that report may never get done and that client or rather prospective client may be the one that got away. It is not easy being a home-based entrepreneur but it can be very rewarding.
