World Food DaySeptember is an almost picture perfect month, sunny days with 16-20 C temperatures, some rain. My garden is still blooming. All the tomatoes have ripened. It is now Fall, but after this morning's fog, the Sun is so intense we could be heading into Spring. Of course that requires you to ignore the golden and yellow leaves on the trees and ground. October 16th is World Food Day. Each week between now and then we will explore what this, increasingly important event means. This year's theme is Biodiversity for Food Security. Biodiversity for Food Security Each year on 16 October, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations celebrates World Food Day in commemoration of its founding on that day in 1945 at Quebec City, Canada. The theme for World Food Day and TeleFood campaign for 2004 is "Biodiversity for Food Security". It will highlight biodiversity's role in ensuring that people have sustainable access to enough high-quality food to lead active and healthy lives. Biological diversity is fundamental to agriculture and food production. People rely on the variety of food, shelter, and goods for their livelihood. Yet, humans put increasing pressure on species and their environments. As a result, many plants and animals are at risk, as well as essential natural processes such as pollination by insects and the regeneration of soils by micro-organisms.* I have made little attention to food supplemnts over the past years. Now that will change. One of the supplements that I take on a regular basis is Flax seed oil. Flax seed oil is a source of Omega 3 and the supplement that I take is 1,000 mg per day. Usually in the morning followed by some yogurt. I have read that dairy products can help the flax do its work. I have found no information to contradict that, so I am enjoying the benefits of both and will continue to do so unless new information comes my way. When it comes to food and food supplements I try to be objective. Do not take anything based upon the opinion of a non-xpert such as myself. I am simply sharing my story. Do you own research. Consult with you doctor if you are under a doctor's care before you take anything new. Communication between doctor, naturopath or nurse practioneer is essential. Be straight forward and do your homework. Let food be your medicine but consult, consult, consult.
