Slow down

Lets talk food. I find that my enjoyment of eating has gone up while my consumption of food has gone down. I began to reduce my intake of fat, salt and sugar about 6 years ago. I still ate too much. One reason for this is that I ate too much period. The other is that I ate a lot of bread. Now I am not saying bread is bad. I am saying that I ate too much. Some days I would consume at least 10-12 slices. Now I have 3 at the most.

Another change is that I only eat organic bread. I can buy this in several places around town. My favourite is at the Saturday morning Farmer's Market at the Canadian Lakehead Exhibition grounds. It is the best bread that I have ever tasted.

I sold my bread maker a few months back but now I miss it. It allowed me to make great bread right in my home kitchen and with very little effort. I am getting another one. It will make a great family gift. I sold the other one because I have very little kitchen space. So I was not using it. I have done some rearranging and now have the ideal space. I need a model with a front door not one that opens from the top. I have seen the folly of my ways and will correct them.

The Holiday season approaches. It is the time for light, love, compassion and sharing. Food can play a central role in the Seasonal Celebrations. Consider giving a bit to a local food bank or emergency food program. We who have more can share. Charity is not the solution but it can help reduce the suffering while we build a sustainable, prosperous world.

Food plays a major role in defining the society we inhabit. To be more accurate our relationship to food defines the society we build. We can change our direction by changing our eating habits. Eat at home. Eat only the food you grow or buy from a local farmer. Eat organic. This will define one kind of society. Eat fast food. In the car or at home. Eat anything that is called food, or processed petroleum food product and you define another society. We make the choice each day.

Slow down you move too fast comes to mind. People are so busy, so rushed, so out of control. Take a minute and treat yourself to a home made meal, even if the neighbourhood restaurant has to make it. Just be sure the restaurant is locally owned and operated. More next week.
