World Food Day

This week's article is a special edition and appears one day earlier than usual. Why? Thursday, October 16, 2003 is World Food Day. World Food Day (WFD) was established by FAO's Member Countries at the Organization's Twentieth General Conference in November 1979. The date chosen - 16 October - is the anniversary of FAO. It has since been observed every year in more than 150 countries. I have chosen to depart from the regular article format in order to encourage people to think about food and hunger. Then, I ask you to start talking about what we can do. This week, instead of an article, I'd like to open a community dialogue on food, hunger and food security. Tell me what you think.

Why are people without food? Let's ask ourselves and each other this question. What do you think? Why are people hungry?
