I have been writing Field to Table for some time now. It is time to shift the focus but not the subject. Each week we will still explore the journey that food makes from the field where it is grown to your table where it is consumed. What will change is our exploration of a sutainable way we can meet our food needs. In fact, as we discover permaculture and its possibilities, we will see that we can meet many of our basic needs without having to live in caves and walk everywhere, not that walking and cave dwelling are bad things, just not for everyone.

Whenever people ask me what I do and I reply that I am a permaculture designer, they almost invariably ask me; What is permaculture? So for all who wonder just what permaculture is and what it means to you, the following is a review of Graham Burnett's "Permaculture, A Beginner's Guide." If you are curious about permaculture and all that it means then Burnett's booklet will answer all your questions. In fact, it is an ideal place to begin your permaculture journey.

The term permaculture was coined by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren in the mid-1970s, by combining two words, permanent and agriculture. Today many permaculturalists believe that permaculture can also stand for permanent culture. Together, Holmgren and Mollison created a design system that provided people with a method to respond to the serious environmental, political and social challenges that face us all.

Permaculture design emphasizes the observation of nature and naturally occurring patterns. Burnett's definition of permaculture reflects this essential design element. Burnett says that permaculture is about creating human habitats by following nature's patterns.

"Permaculture: A Beginner's Guide" is just that, a step by step guide for people who are new to permaculture. The booklet has numerous illustrations that not only enhance the text but also enable the reader to develop a clearer understanding of the possibilities that this innovative design system has to offer.

The use of tables such as Some Useful Weeds and Year Round Food from Your Garden provide the reader with handy reference tools that they can use as they develop their own design. In fact, the booklet is written in a light hearted but highly informed manner which makes it a pleasure to read and to learn as you do.
