in itself can become a challenge. Delegating jobs to others before we wear ourselves out is also important. If visitors are expected during a holiday or during the summer months, they can help with younger children, cooking, and cleaning up. Making it clear to people what we can and cannot do can make the difference between an enjoyable time or a very stressful time. By making it clear to my sister that I can't do much cooking, but am willing to change a diaper or just spend time with my nephew is healthier for me than giving her a much needed break from cooking meals. Since my husband and youngest son will also be there, both of them can help her with meals, so that it becomes an enjoyable time for all of us. Informing my husband and son that they will be expected to pitch in and do what they can to help her will provide some free time for her and I to just be together. Communication of what our needs are, and listening to others of what their needs are will help to make a special holiday or a vacation time pleasurable instead of just adding more stress upon everyone involved. Special holidays and vacations with family and friends can be a time of sharing information about our fibromyalgia so that they can understand why we may look good, but need to rest and deal with our pain and other symptoms if they arise. Taking some information about fibromyalgia and giving it to family and friends to read and allowing them to ask us questions is one tool that we have available to us. Printing out accurate information from the Internet and sharing openly what our lives are like now can help not only ourselves, but it can be a way of educating others of this often misunderstood condition. Taking time to enjoy a special holiday or having a relaxing vacation may require some planning on our part, but the key words are planning, delegating, communication, and relaxation.
