A Walk Through the 12 Steps: Step 11 - Page 2

Many of us have said prayers in the hope that God would do our will and give us what we want. But experience shows that our will often gets us into trouble and generally leads to disappointment in the end. I have prayed for my fibromyalgia to go away, to have less pain and fatigue, and to have people around me give me the support that I need. But when I turn my life over to the God of my understanding, I don't ask for these things. I ask for peace and serenity in my life, and sometimes the way I receive it is a surprise to me. God knows what is best for me, and if it means living with the pain and fatigue of fibromyalgia, then I must accept it as a part of my life. Once I accept it, I find that the simple joys of my life mean that much more to me.

Granted, I don't always make time to pray and meditate. When I have had a particularly bad day of pain, fatigue and stress, I can look back upon that day and see that if I'd taken the time to just sit quietly outside by myself for a period of time, I would have had a better day. Also, I wouldn't have to be making amends to others for my emotional outbursts. Most of us are smart, but we learn lessons of life very slowly. If we can remember to take the time to be in solitude with the God of our understanding each day, we will learn a valuable lesson of life.

We need to make the effort to strengthen our spiritual lives, focusing on seeking God's will for us, and gaining the power to carry His will out. For no matter how uncertain we may feel, tremendous power is available to us when we turn to the source of unlimited Power.

It is through prayer and meditation in whatever form we choose for ourselves that strengthens our contact with this source of Power. Through doing this on a daily basis, we can accomplish previously unimaginable goals. The greatest gift that we can give ourselves and others is to obtain the goal of living happy and gratifying lives in spite of having fibromyalgia.
