The Piano Tuner

© Cynthia Webber (Jausten)

Music has always been a part of my life, and, while chatting with a friend who also has fibromyalgia and having my piano tuned in the background, we started discussing the relationship between a piano, fibromyalgia and creativity.

The piano is ourselves, and since not all pianos are built the same, comparing a Steinway piano to a locally made brand is like comparing ourselves to another person. Also, a Steinway becomes out of tune just like any other piano, and needs to be tuned on a regular basis in order to sound as beautiful as it does.

With fibromyalgia, we are out of tune and need a good piano tuner to help us to become the best that we can. We may never be a Steinway, but our individual sound will be better once we are in tune within ourselves.

Having fibromyalgia means that our lives have changed. We can whine and complain about our fate of living with chronic pain and fatigue, but that won't help us to get in tune with ourselves. We can ignore our symptoms, and keep pushing ourselves until we are unable to do anything at all, but that won't help us to live a fulfilling and satisfying life.

The best piano tuner for our fibromyalgia is our Higher Power. Our physicians and other health care workers may help, but our Higher Power is the main source for tuning ourselves into becoming the most creative that we can become in spite of our fibromyalgia. Friends may offer support, but our Higher Power has provided us with the tools that are available for us in order to feel better about our lives.

Tuning a piano takes several hours, and sometimes a repeat tuning must be done if the piano hasn't been tuned for a long time. Many different tools are used during the tuning process, and, while the piano tuner is working on a particular piano, he/she is listening and feeling the tone of only that piano. A piano that hasn't been played for a long time will take longer to tune. Weather changes can also affect the sound.

We need to turn our lives over to our Piano Tuner, and give ourselves time and use the tools that He has provided for us to the best of our knowledge. Educating ourselves about fibromyalgia is one of the most important tools that we possess. Also, accepting ourselves as individuals, and learning to listen to our inner voice, and focusing upon ourselves rather than comparing ourselves to others is very important for us. If we haven't looked at ourselves for a long time, and have ignored our inner strengths, then it may take us longer to become in tune again.
