May 12: CFIDS; FMS Awareness

May 1, 2000 - © Cynthia Webber (Jausten)

In some communities around the world, May 12 is considered CFIDS/FMS Awareness Day. For those who are interested in reading more about projects that have been organized around this date, there are many websites filled with information, and three of them are given below.

Although May 12 is not a designated day for CFIDS or FMS in either the United States or Canada, these sites do provide information for making the public, media, and government aware of these chronic conditions. In order for May 12 to become an international date of awareness, countries must be made aware of not only these chronic conditions, but also government officials must declare this the official date. Until that occurs, we can continue to pressure our government officials and utilize the media in order to be heard.

Whether May 12 becomes an international date for awareness of these conditions isn't important. What is important is to send letters and do what we can to make government officials recognize that we have a real condition. Flooding their offices with either email or regular mail is a beginning, and utilizing May 12 for such an undertaking will have a stronger effect than random emails or letters being sent.

Activism Project Fibromyalgia Day, 2000 is maintained by two women in the United States, and it has not only email addresses for the media, but also a form letter which is easy to send to either the media or government officials. I encourage all to visit this site, as there are over twenty email addresses for the media listed.

Also, National Fibromyalgia Awareness Campaign has not only a great deal of information about the campaign to inform government officials of fibromyalgia, but also information related to disability, research, and current news in the United States.

The Invisible Illness & Message in a Bottle is an independent site maintained by a woman living in Canada. She also have a page for those in the United States who wish to send information to their government officials.

The May 12 Awareness campaign is designed to minimize the time and energy requirements on your part. I encourage everyone to visit these sites and send the form letters. For those in Canada, there is no postage cost to send a letter to the Federal Government. The letter only has to be marked, "Postage Paid".

May 12 may not be the designated date for CFIDS and FMS awareness in all states, provinces, or countries, but it is a beginning spot for us to make our conditions known to not only the media but expecially to our government officials.
