doctors on medication, how it works, what it does and does not do, and
what the long term effects might be. One thing that came out loud and
clear is that many people with chronic pain are taking the wrong type
and/or inappropriate quantities of pain relief medication, and some of
the drugs may even be counteracting each other. As a result of this pain
management programme, some of my colleagues found they could reduce the
medication a bit, and felt better for it. Although not a primary aim of
the programme, it is a welcome bonus when it happens.
Relax ................ The opportunity to try out various relaxation techniques each day was a welcome relief from all the physical and mental activity. We all found that these short sessions gave us a period of either partial or complete pain relief, and gave us some pointers to further learning and practice. For many, this was very high on the list of plus points for the programme. In conclusion Sadly, space does not allow more detail here, but I hope you will be moved to find out more and maybe try a similar programme yourself. I gained a tremendous boost from the whole thing, my mobility, flexibility and strength are much improved, and my attitude has changed from that of a suffering survivor to a more positive thinking person. My thanks go to the Pain Management Unit at the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases, Bath, England, for the opportunity to experience their Pain Management Programme. It has helped me greatly to overcome many of my chronic pain problems, and has provided a valuable basis for this article. Pain Management - Improving Mobility
