Fibromyalgia and Suicide: Part 1

Guest article, by Zhann, on fibromyalgia and suicide.

SUICIDE! I think most people who have had losses, or who have been ill for any long period of time have had these thoughts. Most never act on it, but some do. Some accomplish, others do not but may try again. (Personally, I think that we could use a good asisted suicide program (I don't want to be on life support and in pain with no hope of recovery for years). I know some do not believe this, but I do.

So what do we do?

No one answer seems to be the best. Some of the most well meaning ideas seem to be the worst. Go and let God take care of it-ok we wonder why God let this happen. Also, many times you can't discuss this with religious leaders as they think you are committing a sin. As if we don't have enough troubles, now we are sinners. For some people, though, church can be an answer if the people are accepting and don't consider you a bad person.

Just pick yourself up and get over it? I think one of the old late night talk show hosts said it best (fibro - I can't remember his name) said it best (Depression is like you are lying there hurting and the magic pill is one inch from your outstretched hand and you can't scoot that one inch to get it).

Get a hobby-please??? I can't brush my teeth much less get a hobby.

Get a pet? I will kill it because I won't be able to feed it. (Now I think pets are one of the best antidotes to depression, but I think there needs to be a responsible person around to take care of it).

Get in an exercise program-get those endorphins going. Volunteering. Tell a friend (most don't want to know). True in some instances. Take a pill-sometimes a good idea, sometimes not. So what do we do???????????? I don't know. Just can relate what helped me. It is a long process and not easy. Even after you are feeling ok, you know you have to keep working at it.

  1. A pain killer helped so I could at least move and get out of bed without collapsing. Only had to take it one week. Still hurt today but can move.

  2. Antidepressants-helped but only after I took them for a period of time. Mainly they helped me to attend. They didn't make me feel good.

  3. Hear a human voice-find someone and ask them if you can call them ocassionally - just
