Fibromyalgia, Nutrition, and Exercise

food, then I did feel much better.

The Tufts University Nutrition Navigator is the best resource I've found for balanced, reputable, information regarding all aspects of nutrition.

So what about exercise? Back to the 30 minutes a day plan. I recently discovered Curves, and am now a confirmed addict. LOL It's fun, relatively easy, gets me out of the house at least three days a week with my friends, quick, makes me feel good, like I'm doing something positive for myself, gives me more energy, and generally allows me a form of exercise (strength training) that I otherwise would not have considered an option. And, did I mention it's fun? :)

Curves is rather fast paced though so if you're not able to keep up with a regular group be sure to ask if they have a senior's group, or other, slower-paced group you can join.

This article describes how one FMer, Jessica Mendes, has benefited from the "Curves" experience. I noted at the end of the article, referring to hydraulic resistance equipment; ... "Adjustable" is key, here, since you'll also find non-adjustable hydraulic resistance equipment, namely at Curves. Non-adjustable poses problems, says Glen. "You need to provide periodic variance to shock the muscles and nervous system - otherwise, when you reach your maximum speed you will plateau, as your body has adjusted to a certain setting."

This is something that I will need to investigate further. My feeling is that "shocking" the muscles and nervous system of a fibromite is probably not a good thing to do anyway. Everything I've read regarding fibromyalgia and exercise advocates slow, gentle exercise, that you work up to over time. Walking is still my main source of aerobic exercise, but Curves now gives me the ability to strengthen and tone the muscle groups that walking alone cannot.

Over a year ago I wrote this article, Fibromyalgia and Exercise. As you can see, I've still been looking for the plan that works best for me. I hope now that I've found it. Stay tuned..

The important thing to remember, from all this, is to find the plan that works best for you. As always, moderation in all things is still the key.

Update: I found, that after about three months I could no longer continue this program. I would love to have been able to continue my Curves experience, but the increased pain levels, fatigue, and sleep deprivation were just not worth it.

I certainly would not want to discourage anyone else from trying
