Heirloom lace shawls are beautiful and intricately designed, but knitting any project on 00 needles with thread-like yarn is very time consuming. Instead, here is an easy pattern for a lace-look shawl on large, #8 needles.
Pattern: Gothic Leaf Lace
Row 1: K1,*SSK,K3,yo,K2tog,yo,k1,yo,SSK,yo,k2,k1* Rep from * to end
Row 2 and Every alternating row, Purl
Row 3: K1,*SSK,k2,yo,k2tog,yo,k3,yo,SSK,yo,k2,k2tog,k1,Rep from *
Row 5: K1,SSK, k1,yo,k2tog,yo,k5,yo,SSK,yo,k1,k2tog,k1 rep from *
Row 7: K1,SSK,yo,k2tog,yo,k7,yo,SSK,yo,k2tog,k1 rep from *
Row 9: K1,(SSK, yo) twice, k7, (yo, k2tog),twice, k1 rep from *
Row 11: K1,*YO,ssk,YO,K3,K2TOG, K1,ssk,K3,YO,K2TOG,YO,K1, rep from *
Row 13: K2,*yo,SSK,yo,k2,k2tog,k1,SSK,k2,yo,k2tog,yo,k3,rep from *
Row 15: K3,yo,SSK,yo,k1,k2tog,k1,SSK,k1,yo,k2tog,yo, k5,rep from * last repeat will only be knit 3 to end
Row 17: K 4,*yo,SSK,yo,k2tog,k1,SSK,yo,k2tog,yo,k7, rep from * and last repeat will end in knit 4
Row 19: K4,*(yo, k2tog)twice,k1,(SSK, yo)twice,k7, rep from * with last few k ending in 4 -instead of the 7
Row 20: Purl
Repeat this pattern for your lace.
Shawl Materials:
- #8 American needles
- 8 - 16 oz of baby fingering weight yarn, mohair, angora, cotton, or silk
- Cast on 16 stitches for every 4 inches of width you want on your shawl, plus 1 stitch at the end of these repeats.
- Knit in pattern until you reach the desired length.
Shawl Edge:
Pick up stitches along the long edge. Knit 3 rows. On the 4th row knit1, knit 2 together across. Then knit 3 more rows.
