Paste Resist Dyeing by Lili Pintea-Reed

One method of producing the effect of batik without the mess of wax, and having to boil it out of the finished cloth is paste resist. In this technique, one uses a paste to form the designs on the cloth. It is let dry and then and then dye is painted over the cloth. The dried paste serves to resist the color and preserves the color of the cloth beneath it. Using this technique, I produced the dye painting Fall 1 you see at the beginning of this article.

To make this particular dye painting, I used light cotton cloth. Moving from light to dark like batik, I painted the white areas first in a corn starch paste. In traditional paste resist in Japan called Katazome one would use rice flour paste, but corn starch works OK and flour and water is adequate, but harder to wash off.

After the paste dried, I painted a yellow turmeric solution in leaf shapes over the piece and let it dry. Then to save them, I painted a paste over the top of the dry leaf shapes. I then painted a solution of red procion dye in leaf shapes. I let that dry and then over painted them in paste to protect them.

The final color step was to over paint the whole piece with an indigo dye solution and let that dry.

Once dry, I washed the paste off the piece revealing the multi-colors of all the leaves on a background of blue with white stippling.

I think it looks pretty nice.
