I have always preferred directions for projects which can be expanded or used in several different applications. So I decided to write a general article on how to knit a heart pattern. This way you can make several heart projects for Valentine's Day gifts.

General Directions - Knit:

To knit a heart one starts with two stitches and increases at each edge every other row. So increase in the two stitches and knit the next row even. Then increase at each edge stitch every other row (like the photo ) until you have a heart as wide as you like. Then work even until you wish to make the top "bumps" for the heart. Divide piece into two sections. Decrease every other row at the outer edge and mid section until the heart has a top shape you like.

General Dirctions - Crochet: To crochet a heart one starts with two stitches and increases at each edge every other row. So increase in the two stitches and crochet the next row even. Then increase at each edge stitch every other row (like the photo ) until you have a heart as wide as you like. Then work even until you wish to make the top "bumps" for the heart. Divide piece into two sections. Decrease every other row at the outer edge and mid section until the heart has a top shape you like.

Using these general directions you can make everthing from a lapel pin to a big heart pillow ---or even an afghan. I suggest wash clothes for gift baskets in lots of colors and many many lapel pins.. smile...

Lapel Pin: Uses the directions up to a width of and inch and then decreases to fit.

Dish Cloth: Use the directions until the cloth is seven inches wide for a nice size cloth, and then work even and decrease. These make great gifts especially done in many colors!

Pillow: If you have more time work the pattern until the width is around a foot plus and then work even. Make two. Create a cloth inner liner and stuff. Then fill. Seal seams. And then add some great lace for edging, or work lace around the edge if you have lots of time!

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!!!
