CHRISTMAS MITTENS (and a few Other Quick Projects)
By
Lili Pintea-Reed
Here is a pair easy to knit Christmas Mittens. They are done on two needles, so even a beginning knitter can make a pair. I make lots of these at Christmas for gift and charity giving. A fast knitter can make a pair in an harried evening! So you still have time to make several pairs before the Big Day! The size indicated is for a kid, but you can adjust to fit bigger hands. Materials: Number 6 American needles Number 8 American Needles 2 oz. Red Yarn Green Yarn for crochet or stitched trim Directions: Make two --- one for each hand. Cast on 30 with number six needles in the red yarn. Work a knit one, purl one rib. Knit in this manner for 14 rows, or wrist length desired. Change to number eight needles and start to work in stocking stitch. Work even for five rows. To shape the thumb you need to increase every other row -- on each side of the work. This will make 40 stitches total after the increases are done. Place five stitches beginning edge on a stitch holder. Knit across. Place five more stitches on stitch holder. This means five stitches on each side are being held. Knit the rest of the work even in stocking stitch for five inches. Decrease every * third stitch by knitting two together.* Work even next row then repeat * * again. Work even next row and then bind off remaining stitches. Shape Thumb: Go back to one of the side groups held for the thumb. Place stitches on needle. Work even in stocking stitch seven rows. Then work next row by knitting two together at edge. Repeat rows until one stitch remains. Bind off by pulling yarn through. For other side of thumb repeat above. FINISHING: Fold the mitten in half length wise. Match thumb sections and mitten body. It should look almost done! Join the sides by crocheting the open side shut with the green yarn. One does this by putting the hook through a stitch picked up on both sides and then working a single crochet. Repeat along the whole edge. If you don't crochet you can join by using the green yarn and blanket stitching the work together to make the fancy edge. Extra pattern: Super Fast Xmas Wreath Pins Take green baby fingering weight yarn or embroidery floss and chain eight stitches. Join with a slip stitch. Work next row by single crocheting twice in each foundation stitch. This makes a nice green round. Take red ribbon and thread it through the wreath. Tie off in a bow. Voila! A fast mini wreath for a pin or earring.
