A quick flag pin (or do two for earrings) can be made quickly and easily for gift giving using basic cross stitch technique.

Materials: red and blue embroidery floss ten count white aida cloth or scraps to suit project

Directions:

Cross stitch 20 stitches in red. Skip a row on the white cloth and cross stitch another in red. Skip one more row, and do one more across the piece all twenty stitches.

Begin star section: ROW 1: From right edge (since you don't want your flag to be backward) skip 13 stitches in white. Then start in blue and work seven in blue. ROW 2: Next row work three in blue skip one and work three more in blue. Work the rest of the row in red. ROW 3: Skip 13 white and then work in blue two stitches. Skip one and work one blue and skip one. Work the rest in blue. ROW 4: Work one blue, skip one, three blue, skip one, one blue. Work the rest of the row in red. ROW 5: Skip 13 and then work one blue, skip one, three blue, skip one, one blue. ROW 6:Skip one and work one blue and skip one and then work the two in blue. Work the rest in red. ROW 7: Skip 13 white. Then work three in blue, skip one and three in blue. ROW 8: Work Seven in blue and then thirteen in red.

Work in ends. Clip flag from aida cloth.

Obviously, a smaller count per inch will make a bigger flag and the larger count per inch cloth produces smaller fine work.

Make lots for friends!

Happy Election Day!
