Big Project: Knitted Winter Coat by Lili Pintea-Reed

Here is one of several big projects I'll post so that you can get started before the snow flies!

It is a warm kimono style winter coat for you to wear, even in the harshest weather. While friends predicted I need a sweater underneath as I knitted in pure wool it is warm and toasty even in our Zone 4 winters. My yarn was handspun wool of three colors spun together to make a bulky yarn. See closeup picture of blend.

Materials:

1 and a half pounds of wool yarn medium dark color bulky

1/2 pound very dark yarn for edging and buttons - bulky

number 8 circular needle long (American)

number eight needles long (American)

Gauge:

BACK: Cast on 100 stitches in darker contrast yarn. Work in rib stitch for two inches for border. Then switch to medium color and knit in sticking stitch for 34 inches for long coat, or shorter if you want a jacket style.

Shape arm hole: Create an arm hole by knitting four stitches together. Knit across. Repeat. Then knit even for 11 inches or longer if you are very tall.

Bind of by working off ten stitches on each side four times leaving twenty stitches to be moved to stitch holder.

FRONT: (Make two)

Cast on 60 stitches in dark yarn. Work like back in rib stitch for two inches. Then switch to medium color. Work as back in stocking stitch for 34 inches.

Shape arm hole: Create an arm hole by knitting four stitches together. Knit across. Repeat. Then knit even for 5 inches or longer if you are very tall.

Shape collar: In side of piece you pick to be the center front on each piece --making sure one is a designated right and left sides --- begin to decrease to shape fron opening into a slope. Knit two stitches together every other row until 40 remain. Work even until arm hole measures 11 inches from first arm decrease.

Bind of by working off ten stitches on each side two times.

Sew front and back together at sholders.

SLEEVES:

Pick up 60 stitches along sleeve edge. Work even for five inches then begin to decrease every four rows by knitting two together at beginning and end of the row. Work in this manner until sleeve is below the elbow of wearer just above the wrist. Decrease every other row until wrist is met then knit every other stitch together to shape wrist or until number of stitches reamining is 30. Switich to dark yarn and knit in rib for two inches.
