Here are the directions for a summer hammock made using scrap yarn for color and cotton yarn.

Materials

  • leftover acrylic yarn scraps for color
  • worsted weight cotton yarn
    or
  • shirt weight cloth torn into half inch strips (sewn to length)

Directions

If using shirt weight cotton, tear strips and sew together. Roll into balls.

Take one strand of yarn scrap and one strand of cotton (or rag strips) and crochet a foundation chain of 200.

Row 2 and 3:
Single crochet for two rows.

Row 4:
Chain three and turn.
Double crochet two stitches and *then chain six stitches. Skip five stitches in row then single crochet.*
Repeat * * across the row.

Row 5 until length:
Repeat row four until desired length is met.
Single crochet two rows.

This pattern stretches a great deal. A six foot length is suggested - figure it will stretch to eight feet.

Tie the hammock to two sturdy dowels. Use tree branches for a rustic look.

Tie between your favorite trees and enjoy.
