Rabbit Hat for Easter (knit)

Rabbit Hat for Easter By Lili Pintea-Reed

Materials: Blue worsted weight yarn 2 oz. (or so) Assorted worsted weight yarn 1 oz. for face number 6 American needles number 8 American needles

Directions:

Cast on 60 stitches to number six needles in blue. Knit one, purl one rib for 12 rows. Switch to number eight needles and knit in stocking stitch for six rows.

Face: To make the mouth, locate the middle of the work and count five stitches from the middle. Knit even in blue yarn to this point, then switich to the mouth yarn. Carry the blue in back of the work, and knit ten stitches in pink to start the mouth. Increase the number of pink stitches by two on each side of the mouth for six rows. This makes a sort of simple wide smile. Break off pink yarn and work into piece.

Knit even for four rows in blue yarn.

Nose:

A simple nose is square. Find center stitch and count out four and mark. Knit in blue until marker then work gray in. Knit in gray for nine stitches. Carry blue in back of work. Knit six rows in this pattern, Break off gray and work in.

Knit four rows in blue.

Eyes: Simple eyes match the the nose. When the body of the hat is complete, knit even for one row.

Knit 20 stitches in blue, then work in yellow for first eye. Knit four stitches in yellow carrying blue in back of work. Switch back to blue and knit 24 in blue carrying yellow in back of work. Knit four more in yellow for second eye. Then switch back to blue and complete row. Repeat these rows six times for some nifty rectangles.

Shaping: To decrease, knit two together every third stitch (leaving 40 stitches). Knit even for four rows, then decrease in the same manner leaving 28 stitches. Knit even for a row, and then the next row knit two together leaving 14 stitches. Bind off. Sew the hat together.

Ears:

To shape ears, pick up ten stitches near the top of the hat and work even for 14 rows in garter stitch. To make ear point decrease every other row until two stitches remain. knit together and pull yarn through. These ears tend to flop over so you could double the yarn for a more "stand up" ear.

Happy Easter and Passover and any spring holiday I missed! Lili
