Marilyn Monroe Scarf
by Lili Pintea-Reed
Here is a scarf based on a head covering Marilyn Monroe wore. It is knit in mohair or silk, but a sturdy worsted will give a warm garment. Rather than a lumpy knot, I added the pull through feature I've described in other scarf patterns. Materials: Two balls fine mohair or silk number eight (American) needles a stitch holder Directions: Caste on 20 stitches (for adult scarf add more)... Garter stitch (I said this was easy) for 24 rows (12 garter ridges)... Pick up stitich holder... Knit one stitch on to needle.... Slip next stitch on to stitch holder... Continue to do this until all stitches are on either holder or needle... Knit stitches on needle in garter stitch for ten rows (five garter ridges) ... Put them on another stitch holder... Take stitches on FIRST stitch holder and knit them in garter stitch for ten rows ....same as above...You now have two sections of ten stitches each. Recombine them by knitting one stitch off needle... then one off stitch holder until all twenty are back on one needle... Shaping for head cover: Knit in garter stitch for one row. Then knit twice into each stitch thus doubing the count (40 stitches). This will make a nice full head cover. Switch to stocking stitch and knit until piece will fit around the head a neck with some drape. Knit two together and garter stitch (20 stitches). Garter stitch one mor row. Make second knot holder: Like above knit one and slip one stitch on to holder just like above... Garter stitches on needle for ten rows. Garter stitches on holder for ten rows and recombine as above... Knit all 20 stitches for 24 rows (12 garter ridges) and bind off.... To wear tuck one end through the slit you created by slipping the stitches... Go To Page: 1
