CHRISTMAS TREE HAT by Lili Pintea-Reed

2 oz. green wool (MC) 1oz red wool (A) number double point 6 American needles number double point 8 American needles

Pattern: knit one row red knit seven rows green

Directions: (child's hat) ROW 1-12 Cast on 60 stitches on number 6 needles. Knit one, purl one pattern for 12 rows.

Change to number 8 needles and knit PATTERN four times in stocking stitch. Check to see if hat will encompass child's head. The best way recommended by traditional knitters is to see if the length from ribbing is as long as the intended wearer's hand from palm bottom to middle finger tip. If more length is needed knit a few more rows. (Yes I know people say my patterns drive them nuts.)

SHAPING: When the length is proper then begin the decrease rows.

To decrease knit the first MC row around. Then the second row of the pattern *Knit two together, knit one, knit one.* Repeat * * across the row for 40 remaining stitches.

Knit the rest of the pattern rows.

Then *Knit two together, knit one, knit one.* Repeat * * across the row for 20 remaining stitches. Knit a row in stocking stitch. Then knit two together across the next row. Knit a row in stocking and then pull yarn through remaining 10 stitches and draw together.

At this point you now have a nice pointy cap. To make it look like a Christmas tree, you need a star and ornaments! If you are pressed for time, just cut them out of felt and tack stitch on. Or you can make nice roundish ornaments and a star.

Ornaments:

Cast on two. (Knit garter stitch throughout.) Knit across. Next row increase at each edge (four stitches). The next row increase two at each edge (six stitches). Now decrease using the same process in reverse. Knit two together at each edge until you are down to one stitch. Pull the yarn through. Tie the ends together to shape the ball. Make six of five different colors from yarn scraps and then secure to hat.

Star: To knit star cast on six stitches. Knit six rows. Bind off. Pick up three stitches on a side and knit. Decrease by knitting two stitches together each row to make a point. Pick up three more stitches on the side and make another point. Repeat each side. You now have an eight point star.

Secure to hat.

Great! Now you have a wonderful Christmas tree hat, or stuff it for a centerpiece. To make an adult version (my Hubby has one) you simply add more PATTERN sections before the decreases.
