Many people enjoy the country victorian look for their homes. One feature of this look is crocheted rag rugs at various locations. One can purchase antique rag rugs at flea markets and repair them or make your own.

To repair rag rugs: You tear cotton rags at around two inches or so, and stitch them together.

Then chain a length to match the center chain in the old rug. Work single or double crochet around the central chain depending on how solid you want the rug. Single crochet is heavier and wears better. Increase every third stitch or so to shape the rug.

This is a nice project for watching TV or talking with friends.

To make a crocheted rug: Materials: rag strips torn to 2 inch width sewn together K crochet hook

To crochet a traditional round crochet rug, chain three stitches and joind with a slip stitch. Double crochet in each stitch increasing every fifth stitch. Continue in this manner until the rug reaches the size you want.

To make a oval rug, chain until you have a length one third the desired length of the rug intended. Then double crochet around the chain produced, working down one side and around the other. In each row after that, work down the side even until you are one stitch from the end, and crochet twice in that stitch. Round the end and then work two stitches again. Work even down the second side and follow the same instructions for the end.

This will shape your rug in an oval. If you make a very large rug you may need to incorporate two increases at each side of the ends.
