Pumpkin Hat
by

My son is just young enough to still enjoy celebrating holidays, so I made him a number of hats that look like Halloween pumpkins. His little friends and my niece also liked them, so I guess nine is not too old for funny hats! Here are the directions for the two styles of pumpkin hats. They knit up quickly in an evening. Pumpkin Hat with Leaves Materials: orange worsted weight yarn 2 oz. (or so) green worsted weight yarn 1 oz. number 6 American needles number 8 American needles Directions: Cast on 60 stitches to number six needles. Knit one, purl one rib for 12 rows. Switch to number eight needles and knit in stocking stitch for the length of the recipients hand from middle finger tip to the bottom of their palm. This is an old knitter's trick which usually gives a good fit to the hat. When the body of the hat is complete, change to green yarn and knit even for one row. Shaping: To decrease, knit two together every third stitch (leaving 40 stitches). Knit even for four rows, then decrease in the same manner leaving 28 stitches. Knit even for a row, and then the next row knit two together leaving 14 stitches. Knit these even for an inch or so to make the pumpkin stem. Sew the hat together. To create leaves, pick up stitches evenly around the edge of the green yarn. For big leaves pick up 15 stitches or so. For small leaves, pick up around five. Then knit the first row even and every other row after that, knit two together on each outer edge thus creating a triangle shape. To make a pumpkin face crochet in green yarn by picking up stitches on the orange part of the hat more or less centered.
