The PVC PIPE NAVAHO LOOM
By
Lili Pintea-Reed
Many people want to weave but feel they can't because it is too expensive a hobby. This is simply not true. To do simple Navaho weavings a cheap loom can be made of PVC pipe. No nailing required!!!....You can make it to vary in weaving width if you like, and it collapses for storage... Materials: 4 elbows to fit 2 inch width a hacksaw Cut the PVC pipe into two three foot lengths, and two other four foot lengths... Place the three foot lengths as if at the top of a rectangle and the longer four foot lenghts as the sides. Pop the elbows on each corner. Voila!!! A PVC frame large enough for a rug. I recommend reading Rachel Brown's SPINNING, WEAVING, AND DYEING BOOK for directions on warping and weaving on such a loom. I suggest you try something simple like rags strips which work up quickly for your first project. I just lean my loom against the wall in the living room as sort of an on-going decoration when I use it. If you want to vary the size just cut larger or smaller pieces of PVC length to fit. Hope this gets you started in weaving.
