Here is a big loose sweater that's nice to throw on over a shirt. It's made to fit a good size man with a 50 plus inch chest with ease, so adjust to fit accordingly!
Gauge
3.5 stitches across per inch on Number 8 American Needles
6 rows per inch on Number 8 American Needles
Materials:
24 ounces of worsted weight wool, acrylic, or cotton, etc.
1 Set Number 6 American needles
1 Set Number 8 American Needles
Number 6 American circular needle or double points
Back
Cast on 88 stitches with number six needles. Work even in "knit one, purl one" rib for 12 rows. Switch to number 8 neeedles. Work across in "knit two purl two rib." Continue in this manner until piece measures 18 inches in length. Switch to garter stitch and work the next 9 inches in garter. Bind off 22 stitches every row until just twenty stitches are remaining on needle. Place on stitch holder.
Front
Cast on 88 Stitches with number six needles. Work even in "knit one, purl one" rib for 12 rows. Switch to number 8 neeedles. Work across in "knit two purl two rib." Continue in this manner until piece measures 18 inches in length. Switch to garter stitch and work the next 6 inches in garter.
Front Neck
Work even in garter for 24 stitches and place on stitch holder. Then bind off twenty and then work across in garter. Work even in garter for three more inches in length.
Bind off 24 stitches. Bind off the rest in next row..Garter stitch the stitches off the stitch holder and work in garter for three more inches length on that side. Bind off 24 stitches. Bind off remaining stitches.
Sleeves (two)
Join shoulder seams. Pick up stitches along sleeve edge starting at first garter row and picking up evenly over to next side. End with last garter row on the back. The sleeves match the garter section on the front and back. Work even in garter for 10 inches. Decrease to build sleeve shape by knitting every fifth stitch together. Work even for 8 more inches. Second decrease by knitting two together every fourth stitch. Work even for an another inch. Continue this decrease every additional inch in length until 20 stitches remain. Work in "knit one, purl one" rib for three inches to make cuff.
Collar
Using Number six circular needle or double points, knit stiches off back stitch holder, pick up stiches down side edge and knit, then knit front bound stitches and pick up stitches up left side edge. Work these in knit one purl one rib for one inch. Bind off loosely.
