Harry Potter-Type Hat

© Lili Pintea-Reed

My son wanted a Harry Potter-type hat to add to his ever-growing hat collection. Here's the pattern to knit it up in time for Halloween!

Materials:
3 oz. of Black Worsted weight Wool, acrylic, etc.
Number 8 American Needles

Directions:
The hat can be worked either with two needles or four. The sample in the picture was knitted with four, but you can just seam up the back if you knit with two needles.

Cast on 60 stitches. Work in knit one purl one rib for 12 rows.

Switch to stocking stitch (knit one row, purl one row) and knit even for a length of 9 inches total length (six inches in stocking stitch from rib rows).

Decrease by knitting two stitches together every sixth stitch. You should have 50 stitches remaining. Work even for four more inches. The hat total length should be 13 inches.

Decrease by knitting two stitches together every fifth stitch for a total of 40 stitches remaining.

Work even for three more inches in length to total of sixteen inches total hat length.

Decrease by knitting two stitches together every fourth stitch for a total of 30 stitches remaining.

Work even for three more inches, then decrease again every third stitch by knitting two together for 20 stitches remaining. Work even for three more inches. Then decrease every other row by knitting alternate stitches together until only six stitches remain. Pull yarn through and tie off. If you used two needles sew the back seam up.

A fun Harry Potter-type hat for your Halloween haunters!
