People ask where I get my ideas for my patterns and quite frankly I'm not usually sure. Often it's a holiday or a need. So I guess this fits the latter. I needed a sun hat to wear while I work in the garden. Thus the Summer beach hat. This is crocheted with double yarn, so you can make one in a couple of evenings. It's very handy as it folds up to fit in a purse or beach bag. You can make the brim as large or small as you like.

Materials:
4 ounces of assorted worsted yarn or raffia, or plastic bags cut into strips to make gauge
I Crochet Hook (american)

Gauge:
3 double crochet to one inch wide
2 double crochet to one inch high

Directions:
Row 1: chain 6 and then join with slip stitch to form a ring.
Row 2: one dc in each stitch
Row 3: *2 dc then 2dc in next stitch* repeat
Row 4: *1 dc then 2 dc in next stitch* repeat
ROw 5: *2 dc then 2 dc in next stitch* repeat
Row 6: *3 dc then 2 dc in next stitch* repeat
Row 7: *4 dc then 2 dc in next stitich* repeat

Then without increasing, crochet around building sides as high as you want. Cover your ears.

Make brim: increase by 2 sc in every other stitch around. For each row after that --add one stitch to the number you work dc before you increase. This way the brim will spread out in a nice flat way.

Enjoy your time in the sun!
