My son asked for a sweater that looks like a candy cane. At age twelve he is still young enough to love fanciful stuff! Here's what I came up with! HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
Measurements:
Length from back of neck 15" [ 16": 17": 18"] . Figures in square brackets [ ] refer to the larger sizes. Where only one figure is given this refers to all sizes. Materials:
16 oz of worsted weight yarn in red ( MC - main color).
8 oz in white (B - 2nd contrasting color). 1 pair each of No 7 and No 9 American knitting needles. BACK With No 7 needles and MC, cast on [48: 54: 60] sts and work in k 1, p 1 ribbing for 2". Change to number 8 needles and starting with a k row, work in St st For 8 [8:9:10] rows in MC (red). Change to B and work same number of rows for second strip. Repeat red/white stripe pattern four times. Change to MC and work even. Shape Shoulders Continue until work measures 9 1/2 [10:10.5:11] inches, bind off 10 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then bind off 10 more at next two rows. Finally put remaining 20 stitches on stitch holder. FRONT: Same as back until red MC measures 3 [3.5:4:4.5] inches. Then shape neck opening. Knit across 35 stitches and put the remaining stitches on stitch holder. Work 35 stitches even until this section measures 3 [3.5:4:4.5] . Bind off for half of neck edge as follows. Bind off 4 [4.:5:5] stitches and work row even. Work even for one row. Then bind off 4 [4.:5:5] stitches and work row even Work even one row. Then knit two together evey other row (neck edge) 4 times. Knit remaining stitches until blue part of piece measures 10[10.5:11:12] inches. Bind off ten and work even. Then bind off remaing stitches. Knit stitches off stitch holder and pick up 10 stitches across or behind front of work depending if the closure will be for a boy or girl. Work the same shaping neck and shoulder edges. SLEEVES (make 2) Cast on 44 [48: 54: 60] sts in MC and work even for five inches. The knit two together every other row five times. Work even for 7[8;9;10] inches and then knit two together every other row ten times. Work even until arm length fits child's arm then knit every third stitch togehter until 20;22:24 stitches remain. Change to number 7 needles and knit one.purl one rib for two inches.
