Women Against War

© Glenice Whitting AKA Penny White

Wars cost billions, Peace is Free.

The words on the brave banner waving in the winter's wind, fills my mind, pierces my soul. Peace. One five-letter word, so easy to say, so hard to achieve.

I don't begin to know the answers. All I know is that I want all people to have the opportunity to live happy, full lives. Imagine how wonderful it would be to see, night after night TV images of smiles, and healthy children and happy men and women.

Instead the TV images are of African women holding emaciated babies, Moslem women crying over tiny caskets. I cry with them, but have no idea of the depth of their grief. There is so much suffering, too much pain. Is it possible to find peace in the world? In my children's lifetime? Please, let it be in my children's lifetime.

I wash the dishes, mop the floor and catch myself reciting the Global Peace for Women prayer.

We are one global family
All colours, all races, one world united
We yearn for peace, and the healing of our planet
Peace for all nations
Peace for our communities
Peace within ourselves
Let us connect heart to heart
Through our diversity, we recognise our unity
Through our compassion, we recognise peace
Our love is the power to transform the world
Let us send it out

NOW.

But will my heartfelt prayers to the universe help? I like to believe that like a pebble in a pond, the ripples will spread and women of all nations will begin to find their voice and that tiny ripple will become a tidal wave that washes away, injustice, hatred, anger, misunderstandings, terrorism and war.

I know. Maybe I am naïve. Maybe ineffective, but all I know is that I have to believe in something, do something, however small.

THE NATURE OF WAR HAS CHANGED

90% of war casualties are civilians

80% of whom are women and children

A century ago, 90% of war casualties were military men.

sharing this, Penny. Prayer does wonders - let's hope this effort does, too.
