Finding a Feminist Community

©

It's frustrating. Sometimes your feminist beliefs can make you feel like an outsider in some online communities. I've personally discovered that fundamentalist Christians seem to make up a lot of the bulletin boards and email lists where I go to get some info or support. That's fine but then I tend to need a big old dose of bold womyn to make me feel like myself again.

I'm going to grab some links to feminist communities where you can hang out, bitch, whine, or celebrate whatever's happening in your life. Of course, I can't visit every place to get the lay of the proverbial land so use your own discretion when it comes to deciding where you want to invest some time.

Hipmama is already in the recommended links section for being so darn hip. They also have great bulletin boards. Warning: if you're over 30 you may feel a bit, how shall we say, aged there. But don't let that stop you. There are great women to meet there.

Feminist Publishing -- For feminist writers and publishers, concentrating on improving the voice of feminism in all mediums and dedicated to assisting its members to advance their career or publications.

Women Who Roar -- Come and celebrate strong women of fiction, television, and the movies. Share news, reviews, images, wallpapers, and discuss upcoming events with other fans.

Topics of interest include Xena, Dark Angel, Buffy, the women of Farscape, Scully of The X-Files, the books of authors such as Marion Zimmer Bradley (The Mists of Avalon among others), TNT's Witchblade, comic heroines like Sara Pezzini, Lara Croft of Tomb Raider. We don't have to stick with science fiction and fantasy, of course, but these are the genres that seem to give us the best in strong female leads.

Radical Feminist Message Board -- To tell you the truth, there looks like there's more rants than community on this board but they have a password protected board, too, that may be more community-minded.

Feminist Utopia Message Boards -- chat about feminism, get help with a school project. If public boards ain't your thing, Feminist Utopia has a listserv, too.

Home to the Feminista! message board FAQ.

The Feminist Discussion list is hopping. You do need to apply for membership however.

Feminist At-Home Parents discussion group -- for those of us who see no contradiction between those two terms. This is a group for thoughtful, aware, feminist women and men who are currently spending most of their time and energy caring for their children. This is NOT a place for debates of feminism vs. whatever, but rather, a place to share, vent, commiserate and support each other as we fend off the societal onslaught of gender role stereotypes, sexism and stupidity.
