WASHINGTON - March 15 - Stand For Children announced that "Building Our Voice and Vision for All Children" will be the focus of the fifth annual Stand For Children Day. Celebrated on June 1, Stand For Children Day 2001 promises to involve more concerned citizens committed to making children a priority and impact more children than ever before.

Stand For Children Day 2001: "Building Our Voice and Vision for All Children" will consist of Town Hall Meetings across the country to discuss the needs of local children and to develop a clear vision of how communities should support children and families. Stand For Children Day 2001 events will include not only Town Hall Meetings, but book collections, violent toy trade-ins, and enrollments in the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). The results from the thousands of Stand For Children Day 2001 events will be shared at Stand For Children's first convention in Washington, DC at the end of June.

"Over the past five years, Stand For Children Day events have resulted in increasing the number of children with health insurance, the number of guns with trigger locks, the number of high school guidance counselors, and the number of members willing to commit to working to make a better world for children year-round," said Jonah Edelman, Executive Director of Stand For Children. "This year, the events will build our voice and clarify our shared vision for children and their future. We are very invested in helping communities plan local Town Hall Meetings to create their own vision for children and families."

Stand For Children's mission is to build and mobilize a powerful citizen voice to ensure all children the opportunity to grow up healthy, educated, and safe. We support local communities as they organize on issues of local importance such as affordable and quality childcare, safe and educational out of school activities, small class sizes, and access to health coverage. Stand For Children Day 2001 is a call for a collective commitment to creating positive change in our communities.

The first Stand For Children Day, held in 1996 in Washington, DC, was attended by over 300,000 people and brought widespread attention to children's issues. In 1997, supporters at 700 events encouraged legislators to approve CHIP, and at Stand For Children Day '98 events many children were enrolled in the new program. That same year, over 1,200 events and nationwide support for childcare helped pass the Kerry/Bond Amendment, the strongest vote for childcare in over 10 years. In 1999 and 2000, the number of events grew to over 2,000, involving many more than Stand For Children's 5,000 members.
