All parents need and deserve support but gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered (GLBT) parents may feel especially isolated since their experiences becoming and being parents are often outside our cultural norm. Feelings of isolation can be increased by the need or desire to keep one's private life private or by having little contact with others in the community experiencing similar parenting challenges.
The internet has a tremendous number of Web sites, email lists and chat rooms devoted to GLBT parents. This article can help you start your explorations but is by no means comprehensive. Alternative Family Magazine is the first international magazine for GLBT parents and will soon be available at Borders and Barnes and Noble. Until then, the site offers subscription information; a list of available back issues and several sample articles on-line including an inspirational piece about Sol Kelley-Jones -- a 12 year old activist and her two moms. Gay Parenting magazine is another good place to find fine articles about GLBT parenting. This is both an online and a print mag with both types of subscriptions available. Momazons is an organization for lesbian mothers and wanna-be mothers, Momazons publishes Momma-zine, a 16-page newsletter with articles; inspirational "Creating Our Family" interviews; and announcements of local events. They also offer one-on-one support, telephone consultations and support groups. For those more interested in finding on-line support, Dorsie Hathaway -- self described "list wrangler" -- offers links to several GLBT email discussion groups -- many of which she created and owned. At the bottom of her page, she shares links to other lists of lists where you will find an unbelievable number of discussion groups for and about any GLBT issue you can imagine -- not all parenting related! The Lesbian Moms Web Page has valuable insight for lesbians wanting to become mothers through insemination or adoption. Prickly legal issues, medical concerns and straight-forward fertility facts can all be had here. The site was inspired by a lesbian moms email discussion list; a link to subscribe is included at the bottom of the page. The Gay Dad is one man1s site with an impressive array of articles and links. Legalities, practicalities and support are all addressed including links to two gay dads email lists; information about child support enforcement issues; and an article about coming out to your children. The Parent Perspective is a friendly little monthly column written by a lesbian mom. There are seven years worth of columns on this site so you can watch her son grow from schoolager on up to the dreaded teenage years. Bookmark the page for browsing and enjoy. Go To Page: 1 2
