Struggling Adolescent EntertainmentThe strongest relationship difficulties are handled through the sexual tension with an aging playboy. They tease and struggle with each other over the next several days as she tries to lose her virginity while still being repulsed. As he becomes more aggressive, he also fights with the growing sympathy of her unhappy predicament. It’s a bold emotional rollercoaster to display in a film, especially with a character underage, but Breillat respects the needs of both characters, allowing each the possibility of stirring the other to desperation. And because the characters are chock full of flaws, their journey becomes that much more reflectively unpredictable and entertaining. Breillat has been directing and writing films for over 25 years. Between her ample artistic experience, and probably struggling through a difficult childhood herself (or if she didn’t, she certainly can relate to her characters, who are emotionally sympathetic at every turn) she is able to create a portrait of growing up that is admirable and worth watching.
